This happens when you are trying to group placeholders on a slide with other slide objects. Placeholders are special objects on a slide that are part of the slide layout. For example in a conventional bulleted slide, the title and text box are often placeholders, and these cannot be grouped with other inserted slide objects like shapes, pictures, or charts. Similarly, there are other grouping problems you may run into while using PowerPoint.

We have already shown you how to align shapes in PowerPoint. However for alignment to work, you need to have more than one shape (or any other slide object) selected so that they can align with each other. However, you may want to align just one shape (or even a single group of shapes) to the exact center of your slide.

The fact that the SmartArt allows so much customization in PowerPoint by applying new colors or styles means that your SmartArt graphic may be not quite the same as PowerPoint’s default offering. If you do have the need to undo all of the customizations, you can do so by restoring the default layout and colors of the entire SmartArt graphic using the Reset option.

You have already learned about Dynamic Reordering of shapes, where all slides objects are placed in an individual layered view suitable for reordering. This may work well when you have a few objects on your slide but is entirely unpractical if your slide has anything over 10 objects. Fortunately, there is a variation of this technique that lets you only work with the selected slide objects and any other slide objects that overlap the selection.
