Slide Layouts in PowerPoint 2003 are a collection of various placeholders laid out in a fixed arrangement on the slide. You cannot create your own Slide Layouts in PowerPoint, but you can certainly choose from the several great Slide Layouts that PowerPoint provides.

When you insert Slide Numbers on your slides, you may discover that the location of the Slide Number changes depending upon the active Theme of your slides. With some Themes, the Slide Number may be placed at the bottom right. With other Themes, it may be located at the top right. The location of the Slide Number may seem to be influenced by the Theme, and that’s almost true. However, a Theme is a larger concept. It’s only the Slide Master, a subset of your Theme that’s influencing the position of your Slide Numbers.

The moment you add a Slide Number to your slides in Normal view, you expect to see them immediately thereafter. However many times you may not see any Slide Number, or worse, you may see the Slide Number in just a few of the slides! The reason this happens is because Slide Numbers can appear only if the slides have a Slide Number placeholder, if you add Slide Numbers to a slide that has no Slide Number placeholder, then you won’t see any Slide Number!

Slide Masters govern several default attributes for your slides such as the slide background, font choices, colors, and even the positioning of the placeholders. In many ways thus, Slide Masters are the backend workers of your presentation. And even though Slide Masters in PowerPoint 2003 only include limited functionality, you can still use this functionality to either edit existing Slide Masters or even create your own Slide Master.
